Who we are:
Bethel Baptist Church is a Southern Baptist Church in the community of Elsanor, AL, east of Robertsdale. Don’t let our country location fool you. Bethel is an active, thriving, growing, and healthy church. Our average attendance is over double what it was 10 years ago. We are a multi-generational church, evenly spread out across all ages. Our pastor has been here 12 years and our youth pastor 6 years. We don’t just strive to be a great place to attend; we hope to be a great place to work for as well!
Who you are:
Fun, flexible, kind, energetic, and gracious. You will be the first impression for many people who interact with our church. You will be an active Christian involved and committed to a local church, or willing to join Bethel as the Lord leads. You will understand the nature of church work – sometimes it is a hurricane, and sometimes it is a calm day. You are a team player and interact well with both staff and members of the church. You will be the gatekeeper to the staff schedules, the main admin for office affairs, a bookkeeper, a financial assistant, and you will be very familiar with modern technology and its place in churchwork.
Please note that the following job description does not and cannot cover everything which may occur in the context of the position, especially ministry-related opportunities. Read for more info:

-Will answer phones and visits to the church office, distributing messages as appropriate.
-Maintain and coordinate the church calendar, communicating all needs to any parties affected by events and services.
-Able to process, maintain, and pay church bills within Bethel’s structure of doing so. Able to reconcile and keep proper records of Bethel’s checkbooks, credit accounts, etc. Familiar with general budgeting knowledge, and able to learn our specific policies and procedures.
-Able to order, receive, and distribute materials for various ministries of Bethel (janitorial supplies, Sunday School books, etc).
-Able to maintain inventory of needed items for the purpose of restocking, distributing, and general knowledge.
-Able to reconcile giving on a weekly basis (tithes and offerings), quarterly basis (business meetings) and yearly basis (business meetings, tax issues, contribution statements, etc).
-Able to oversee Bethel’s tax obligations, including paying federal taxes and quarterly state taxes.
-Need to be comfortable, or quickly become comfortable with Quickbooks (our financial records program).
-Must have or quickly attain expertise in the following programs: Microsoft Programs (Word, Excel, Publisher), Quickbooks, Canva, Dropbox, and certain web-based template-forms.
-In charge of processing payroll.
Ministerial
-Attend weekly staff meetings (they are during office hours on Monday)
-Prepare bulletins, monthly newsletters, birthday cards, and other communication as needed.
-Participate in the social media strategy of the church. Also willing to become familiar with our website and app, to possibly administrate it.
-You will have the opportunity to engage in ministry to church and community members who reach out to the church office. You’ll have the opportunity to pray with them, encourage them, and provide referrals to them as needed for needs (whether in-house referrals, or other ministries in the community).
A few important notes about this position:
-Must be aware of the fact that so much ministry and work happens outside the boundaries of a job description. This is true for our pastors, and will be true to a degree for you. You will find yourself occasionally saying – “that wasn’t in my job description” but that’s ok! We need for someone to be willing to embrace the new, serve faithfully in the old routines, and help change things if we can become more efficient in our ministry procedures.
-Your ability to work with people will in large part determine your ultimate success here. You will be working with several people on a regular basis: certain deacons, the financial leaders, ministerial leaders, and most of all, the pastors, with a very important asterisk by the senior pastor! The senior pastor will serve as your immediate supervisor, with the personnel committee as the group that oversees the staff as a whole.
-As a member of a small team during most office hours, you will be expected and needed to protect the team, promote peace, show grace as needed, and exemplify the nature of Christ in your conduct, speech, attitude, faithfulness, and demeanor. This means, in large part, learning to understand the extremely varied nature of the job that our pastors perform, and supporting it as best as you can from the perspective of being the office manager. Our team is very close, and it takes time to be a part of a close team. If you’re the right person, God will cement the relationships which will form.
-Sometimes you will need thick skin; other times the tenderness of your heart will need to show. Expect to use wisdom and discernment in dealing with people in general.
-We are flexible as needed; however, initially the job will come with 2 weeks of paid-time off. You must be able to pass a complete background check.
